a-coarse-thumb
Prolific painter and screen printer Philip Durbin presents new work, ranging from clean, colorful graphic-inspired paintings to textured panoramic narrative prints. Durbin’s distinctive combination of hand-painted imagery and printed mark-making is the result of his enthusiasm for pop-art and his keen ability to find the intricate balance between dry wit, overt humor, and mastered skill. This exhibition will feature multi-media work on paper, canvas, and vellum, as well as limited-edition prints and wearable art.

Opening reception on Friday, October 24, from 7- 10 p.m.

Beside You In Time
November 29 – December 27, 2008
BYiT-thumb
Texas-based painter and installation artist Joshua S. Goode is constructing a one-of-a-kind interactive structural artwork exclusively for ArtStorm’s exterior space, as well as assembling an additional site-specific piece inside the galleries. As he continues his introspective exploration and existential quest, Goode’s dramatic works are further developed and inspired by the viewer/participant response. His room-sized installations and walk-in environments, created from natural materials and reminiscent of Native-American sweat lodges associated with rites of passage, are highly-conceptualized and powerful structures, designed to induce a thought provoking, meditative experience for the viewer, and demanding of a spiritual presence of their own. As in all of his work, the artist embraces the challenge to unify all of the spaces of ArtStorm to create fluidity and form a whole and complete environment, unlike anything that has been exhibited before it in the space.

Opening reception on Saturday, November 29, from 7- 10 p.m.

ArtStorm presents the Houston debut of the multimedia dance duo Hooliganship (Peter Burr and Christopher Doulgeris), bringing the freshest incarnation of Cartune Xprez on Wednesday, November 5 at 8:00 PM. This 70-minute program of short animated videos celebrates the wilderness of imagination through motion pictures. Featured artists include Bruce Bickford, Eric Dyer, Shana Moulton, Takeshi Murata, Paper Rad and more. Alongside this cartoon theater they will be performing their most recent piece entitled Realer in which audiences strap on a pair of 3D glasses to bear witness to a televised parade gone awry.

This touring program, which roughly mirrors an upcoming Cartune Xprez DVD publication, will provide a rare opportunity to see videos by emerging artists as well as internationally known artists. Collectively, their resume includes collaborations with Frank Zappa and major exhibitions at the Whitney Biennial, the MOMA in New York, the Sundance Film Festival, the Hirshhorn Museum and many other institutions throughout the world.

Tickets for Cartune Xprez are available at the door for $5.00. Doors open at 7:00 PM. Refreshments will be provided. A Coarse Portal, an exhibition of painter and screen printer Philip Durbin’s new work, will be open for view during this event.

Shoot From The Hip
May 3rd to May 26th 2008
4-up-2

Shoot From The Hip
, curated by ArtStorm board members Melissa Juvan and Isela Aguirre, is an innovative show featuring unusual and interesting alternatives to standard photographic processes such as digital prints, Polaroids, photo-collage and mixed media. Both curators are experienced photographers by trade and for this show they have assembled the work of thirteen local photographers to explore the medium and its infinite potential for innovation and change through experimentation.

From Chuck Ivy’s pinhole camera images to Alicia Seale’s visceral Polaroids, many traditional visual themes are represented, all of them conveyed by decidedly unconventional means. Jim Dillon prefers to incorporate double exposures and light drawings into his photography, while Daniel Hipolito utilizes video to create distorted perspectives, saturated with vivid colors. Alex Nguyen begins with black and white prints and manipulates them into sculptural mixed media, and Lisa Marie Godfrey uses vintage photos as a base for drawings. Michelle Fleming interprets high fashion photography in her own dark way, and Laura Turner and Gabriella Solis capture the architectural form of everyday objects. Co-curators Melissa Juvan and Isela Aguirre will also exhibit their own work collaboratively, in a unique projected installation piece shown for the first time in Shoot from the Hip. Newcomers to the art scene John Hines and Kelly Ekl round out the show of technically diverse photographers.
The opening reception for Shoot from the Hip will feature an interactive “Polaroid Wall.” We invite all guests to participate in posing for a Polaroid to post on the wall, which commemorates the event.

Anywhere But Here
March 29th to April 26th 2008
Kyle-Damon-Ranson

Co-curators Alicia Seale and Megan Whitenton are bringing you the latest and greatest from across the United States in Anywhere But Here. This diverse and powerful collection of drawings, paintings, graphics, collage and digital media is culled from the work of dedicated artists from all over - some of them showing for the first time in Houston.

Shown for the first and only time together in the ArtStorm galleries, the work in this compilation provides a glimpse into the contemporary art scenes of New York, Brooklyn, Portland and San Francisco. The art displayed in Anywhere But Here offsets the varied themes and styles of Houston trends - bold, opinionated paintings, drawings and videos from NYC artists Rachel Blackwell and Giorgio Ira Handman, colorful, sharp works on paper by Brooklyn artist Jesse Gelaznik, dynamic and suggestive paintings by San Francisco-based artist Kyle Damon Ranson, delicate photo-collage pieces by Julia Marjorie Leonard, also based in San Francisco, and the intricate, subtle humor of drawings and multi-media by Jesse Jackson, out of Portland, OR.

The artists also collaborate musically in Houston’s own Wicked Poseur.
